Brú na Bóinne 2016

Brú na Bóinne 2016

On Friday 9th December, the children from Ms. Clarke's and Mrs. Farren's 6th Classes travelled to Brú na Bóinne on what has now become an annual fixture in the 6th Class calendar.

Brú na Bóinne is a World Heritage Site and our children were delighted to witness the extraordinary feats of our ancestors through the construction of the passage tomb of Newgrange. The children were guided through the interpretive centre and gained an insight into life in Neolithic Ireland. As they made their way through all the artifacts on display and viewed a film on the excavation of the tomb, they were busily answering questions and taking notes, as Ms. Clarke had equipped them with a "Brú na Bóinne" quiz sheet to keep them on their toes!

Finally, all 39 children were taken by shuttle bus up to the ancient site itself and were guided into the historic passage tomb and watched a simulation of the first light of dawn as it enters the tomb on the five days around the winter solstice. How incredible were our ancestors with no tools, technology or even the wheel to help them, that they could construct this passage tomb and it still remains watertight thousands of years later!

The children were delighted to have been on this very educational, interesting and worthwhile trip to such a historical area.
