Newsletters 2017-18

Newsletter No. 3 - 4th October 2017

Welcome to our very first digital newsletter! As we begin to move away from paper hardcopies to digital ones, we hope to increase the number of digital communications in the future. This will have a positive impact on the size of the school’s carbon footprint as well as saving money on photocopying and texting. You will not be able to reply to this email other than to acknowledge you have received it, which is unnecessary. The school will continue to communicate essential info through text for the moment. Remember, the school has a very successful Facebook page which is probably the quickest way to keep up to date with current events in the life of our busy school.
Many thanks for your continued co-operation.
Kind regards,

Brian McDonnell

Christmas Assembly
This year’s Christmas Assembly will take place on Thursday, 21 December at 11.15am. Parents are welcome to attend this annual event when the school choir will be on hand with festive carols and hymns. As part of the assembly, we will also host a Xmas Jumper Day in aid of the local branch of the St. Vincent de Paul and we are asking each child to donate €2 for this worthy local charity. Please feel free to join in the spirit of things by wearing your Xmas jumper on the day and who knows, we might get a visit from the man himself at some stage!!

Assistant Principals
Congratulations to Mrs. Bell and Mr. McClean who were recently appointed by the Board of Management to the positions of Assistant Principal II. Mrs. Bell will be taking on the role of curriculum development as well as co-ordinating special education provision with Mrs. Farren. Mr. McClean will have responsibility for the development of an elearning plan and the co-ordination of ICT in the school.
We wish them both the very best in their endeavours.

Building Programme 2018
Full planning permission has been secured for our up-coming building plan. The project has been posted on the Etenders website and we will hopefully break ground early in the New Year. The contractors will most likely access the building site through the staff car park at the rear of the school premises. This may impact on traffic management around the school at certain times but we will keep you up to date on these matters.

Annual Book Fair – Tuesday & Wednesday, 5 and 6 December
The annual book fair will take place tomorrow Tuesday and Wednesday, 5 and 6 December in the Halla Setanta. All parents are welcome to attend. A note regarding times for each class to visit has been issued to your child and is also posted on the schools Facebook page. Parents are welcome to browse the Book Fair with their child at these times. The school gets a fantastic commission on all books sold which we have used to supplement our own library over the years, so please support in whatever way you can.
A number of Book Fair related activities will run during the week and the children have been busy decorating their class doorways by depicting one of their favourite books through art and crafts. These can also be viewed on the Facebook page.

Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland (CBOI)
The children from Ms. Conroy and Mrs. Evan’s classes will perform in this year’s CBOI Peace Proms in the RDS, Simmonscourt, Dublin on Sunday, 4 February 2018 at 2pm. Tickets for their show are now available to purchase online at
This really is an unmissable show if your child is involved as singing with 3000 other pupils while being supported by an orchestra with over a 100 musicians is something that lasts long in the memories of everyone involved.

HOPE Shoe Box Appeal 2017
The children from the senior classes along with their siblings participated in our Annual Shoe Box Appeal recently. Over the past month they were busy shopping and filling 96 shoe boxes with all sorts of goodies. They also made a kind donation of €384, all of which was presented to Patricia Nugent from Team Hope Ireland. Patricia spoke to the pupils about her experiences abroad delivering the boxes to children who have very little and of the great joy the boxes bring annually. She thanked the children for their generosity and thoughtfulness and struggled to fit all the boxes into her car!! Many thanks to Ms. Clarke for organising the event in the school and to all who participated in this worthy annual appeal!

Personalised Christmas Cards
283 packs of Christmas Cards were ordered this year. Many thanks to Donnach Callan of Anglo Printers for his co-operation in producing the cards. Commission of €885 has been generated for the Parents & Friends Association. Once again we would like to thank everyone who supported this!

Dundalk Soup Kitchen Food Appeal
This year, in addition to our Xmas Jumper Appeal, we are collecting food for the local Dundalk Soup Kitchen. We are asking each family to donate non-perishable items like tinned food, rice, pasta, selection boxes, biscuits or even food vouchers to this worthy appeal. Please ensure all items are still in date. Collection will commence immediately and be presented to the Dundalk Soup Kitchen on Thursday, 14 December. Any donations can be left on tables outside the school office.

Children of a Digital Age- 16 Jan 2018 at 7.30pm
A very important workshop for parents on Internet Safety will take place in the Halla Setanta on Tuesday, 16 January 2018 at 7.30pm. The pupils of the school from 1 to 6 class will also receive their own age appropriate workshops in school during the same day. In a rapidly changing digital world it is vitally important to equip ourselves with the necessary skills to protect both ourselves and especially our children on-line. We look forward to seeing a big turnout on the night. Light refreshments will be provided by the Parents & Friends Association.

Sacramental Preparation
Holy Communion: There will be a special “Do this in memory of me” mass for the pupils of 2 class this Saturday, 9 December at 7.30pm in the church.

Confirmation: As part of their confirmation preparation, the pupils of 6 class will have a Ceremony of Light at 7.30pm on Thursday, 21 December. The ceremony will be part of the parish penitential service for Christmas.

The pupils of Mrs. McKeown’s and Ms. Moynagh’s classes are busy preparing for their Nativity play on Tuesday, 19 December at 1pm. Parents and relatives of both classes are invited to attend for what is always a joyful occasion in the Halla Setanta.

Cumann na mBunscol Quiz Final 2017
Commiserations to our school quiz team who, for the second year in a row, were pipped at the post for 1 place in the all-county quiz final! The team made up of Seán Brennan, Ronan Rice, Niall Flanagan, Kevin Plunkett and Ciara Sweeney scored 77/80 after 8 rounds and was unfortunately beaten by Dromiskin N.S. in a tie-break round.
Hard luck to their co-ordinator Mr. McClean and all the pupils involved.

BHK Credit Union Art Competition

Congratulations to Julia O’Callaghan (1), Tony McDonnell(2) and Niall Flanagan (3) who were the school winners in the recent Credit Union Art Competition. Julia’s work was selected as the overall winner from the 4 schools in the BHK group and will be put forward to the regional section of the competition.
