Building Programme 2017/18
As you are aware, during the summer the school authorities applied for permission to build 1 new classroom, 3 SET rooms, a disabled toilet and a storage room to the rear of the existing school building. The school’s appointed consultant, McGahon Architects, have submitted plans to the Louth County Council and we are hoping to secure planning permission soon and break ground on the project some time before Xmas. This will be the 6 capital building programme the school has undertaken in the last 10 years. Some of the other building projects delivered over these years include a 4 classroom extension, the Halla Setanta, a new entrance and most recently the new railings around the school. We are looking forward to your continued support during the next phase of development.

Junior Infants Home Time
By now the junior infants have settled into the routines of the school day and in order to foster more independence on their part, the teachers will allow them to walk to the gate at 1.40pm by themselves from Monday Nov 6. The staff will observe the children from the main door of the school and the children will be instructed to return to their teacher, if for some reason, there is nobody there to collect them.
Dropping Children off in the Mornings
In the mornings, we would also ask parents to encourage ALL children from junior infants up to walk independently into school from the main gates in the morning (unless their child needs assistance). At this stage, older children shouldn’t need to be accompanied by an adult and from a safeguarding point of view; adults should only enter the school grounds with good reason i.e. if they have an appointment or need to speak with a member of staff.

Infant Programme Talk/Parenting Course
There was a great turnout of parents recently for the annual outline of the infant programme in Ms. Moynagh’s and Mrs. McKeown’s classrooms. We were delighted to see and welcome so many interested and committed parents for the talk which covered areas such as literacy, numeracy, phonics and general tips for the year. Your support for the work of the infant department is valued in building the early foundations for your child’s education at St. Mary’s N.S.
Maisie McGuinness’ parenting course is into its 4 week and has proven to be very popular with the 20 participants on a Monday evening. If there is sufficient demand, we will look at running the course again next year.

Parent-Teacher Meetings 2017/18
This year the Parent-Teacher meetings will take place on Wednesday, 15 and Thursday, 16 November from 3.00pm to 5.00pm on each day. As in previous years, appointments will be timetabled.
Each child will be given an appointment time in the next fortnight. These meetings are short updates on your child’s progress. If you feel there is a more pressing or lengthy issue to discuss with a member of staff please arrange an appointment in advance through the office. We would ask parents where possible to keep to the time allocated and only request a change in circumstances where it is necessary.

HOPE Shoe Box Appeal
Ms. Clarke is currently organising the annual HOPE shoebox appeal in 5 & 6 classes. These boxes, wrapped in Christmas paper, are filled with treats for deprived children struggling in poor areas of the world. They can include items for school, hygiene items, small clothing items and a special treat. They are a wonderful gift at Xmas. If you would like your child to participate along with 5 & 6, flyers are available from Ms. Clarke’s class and boxes must be left in the school on
Wed 8 Nov.

Personalised Christmas Cards
As was the case in previous years, Christmas cards created by the students will be available to purchase from the school soon. Production is a little delayed as we are changing to a local company but we hope to have them available to buy in packs of ten after the mid-term

The new term for Fit kids will begin on Monday, 13 November for 6 weeks at a cost of €30 per child. Please call Niall Teather on 0876724411 to rebook your place in the group for this session as places are limited. Please do not take for granted your child has a place.
**Please note the final class from the first term will take place on Monday, 6 November.**

Parents’ & Friends’ Association 17/18
The first meeting of the current school year will take place on Thursday, 16 November at 7.30pm in the school. The Parents’ & Friends’ Association plays a vital role supporting the school during the year raising funds for large scale building projects like the extension currently being undertaken by the school. Each year, the association raises, on average, approx €10,000 and the events run such as the Sponsored Walk, are great family occasions which everyone enjoys. There are only 3 meetings during the year, one in each term, so it’s not too big a commitment. All are welcome, especially new faces!
Also, a very special thank you to Tesco Ireland for their donation of €292 for the token collection recently held in our local store!

Our First Student Council Meeting

After many weeks on the campaign trail, we extend our congratulations to the following students who have been elected by their classmates to represent them on our school’s very first Student Council: Ronan Flanagan, Aoife Sherry, Eoin Gallagher, Grace Conroy, Padraic Tinnelly, Kevin Plunkett, Gavin Reid, Gemma Bellew, James Duffy and Carla Drumgoole. The students, under the stewardship of Mr. Clune held their first ever meeting this week during lunchtime and discussed the many issues affecting their school day. They have come up with a few great ideas to work on so far and we look forward to seeing them work together throughout the year.

Sporting News
Commiserations to both our boys’ and girls’ Gaelic football teams who were knocked out of their respective competitions at the pool stages of the autumn blitzes. The boys were particularly unfortunate as they were only beaten on score difference having conceded a goal in injury time in their match against Kilcurry N.S.
5 and 6 classes have finished their 6 week block of swimming and Mrs. Evans and Ms. McGill will be next to head to Aura on Friday, 10 November. Watch out for notification regarding basketball training which is due to recommence over the winter.

Our new school administration system called ‘Aladdin’ is installed and working well. In order to reduce the carbon footprint of the school, we hope to issue all future non-essential information (including newsletters) via email through Aladdin.
Essential messages will continue to be sent via text for the moment.
A form for parents to complete will be sent home after the mid-term break requesting a preferred email address for school correspondence.
You may submit more than one email address if desired.

Clothing Collection
We had a great response to our first clothing collection of the year. Over 1 tonne of clothing was collected raising €500 in funds. We would like to thank everyone who helped towards this collection. Two more collections will take place during the academic year - one in the New Year and then another finally in May. So if you can remember to store any unwanted items until then it would be much appreciated. Neighbours and relations are welcome to join in!!

Annual Book Fair 2017
The annual Book Fair will take place on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 December in the school. A number of events have been scheduled to run during the week including D.E.A.R (Drop Everything and Read), Buddy Reading and Book Themed Door Displays.
Parents are invited to attend the Book Fair at the time allocated to their child’s class and/or during the 2 days the fair is being held.
Further details will follow.

CBOI (Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland)
Once again this year the school will be participating in the wonderful CBOI experience. Ms. Conroy and Mrs. Evans will be escorting their classes to the RDS in Dublin on Sunday, 4 February at 2pm when the children will have the opportunity to sing as part of the 3000 strong CBOI choir. They will accompany the orchestra through a catalogue of songs both traditional and contemporary in what is always a memorable occasion. You will be able to order tickets for the event through the CBOI office soon.
