Proclamation Day 2016

Proclamation Day March 15th 2016

The Knockbridge school community gathered on Tues 15th March to celebrate a national Proclamation Day. Pupils, parents, teachers , Board members as well as many parents and friends gathered in the school yard for the raising of the Irish Flag and a special reading of a proclamation for a new generation.
On a beautiful sunny spring morning , a procession of dancers , led by internationally renowned piper Patrick Martin , carried the flag through the schoolyard where the chairperson of the Board of Management Rev Fr . Gerard McGinnity was on hand to hoist it into position. The entire school population from junior infants to rang a sé then sang a rousing version of Amhrain Na bhFiann with Patrick Martin leading on the uilleann pipes. Mrs. Farren eloquently described the significance of the event, making reference to the original leaders of the rising and some excerpts of the proclamation read at the GPO were orated by pupils from sixth and Mrs. Bell.
The assembled crowd then made their way to the Halla Setanta where they were treated to a mini concert which included an eight hand Irish dance troop, a trad group and some poetry recitation . Mr. McDonnell conducted the usual business of the monthly assembly and the student of the month awards were presented by Fr. McGinnity.
Mr. McDonnell emphasised how proud the school was of celebrating the importance of its Irish identity every year during Seachtain Na Gaeilge and how the 1916 celebrations had given great focus to this on what was an historical and memorable occasion for everyone in the school community . Cuimhneoimid ar imeachtaí na bliana 1916 i gcomhthéacs iomlán ár staire agus tabharfaimid urraim do na daoine sin ar spreag a misneach agus a n-idéil an náisiún.
