World Book Day 2016

World Book Day in Knockbridge N.S.was celebrated over two days,Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th of March. This is an annual global event which is always an exciting time in our school calendar. This year, the children from 2nd, 3rd and 4th class participated with great enthusiasm in a story writing workshop with Irish author and poet,Enda Coyle Greene which was organised by Mrs. Brannigan. Some very interesting and imaginative creations were produced under her guidance and expertise. After all that excitement, the author was invited to Halla Setanta where Sarah(6th class) and Saorla(5th class) interviewed the author about her life and work. This was all conducted in a most professional manner by our budding “Miriam O Callaghan’s” in front of an audience of their peers.

Meanwhile there were two competitions running throughout the school ;a “design a bookmark” competition and a “match the book to the teacher competition”.Teachers had to select their favourite children’s book and the children had to match the book to the teacher. This all made for very interesting reading and discussions! The eventual winner was Donal (3rd class) Our bookmark competition, involving the children from 3rd to 6th class elicited some fine artwork and a wide range of book titles. The judges had a very difficult task to select the winners in each class.
The children from Junior Infants all the way up to 6th class enjoyed themselves enormously during our Buddy and DEAR reading sessions. The younger children benefitted greatly from the help and guidance given to them from the senior children in terms of enhancing their reading and listening skills during the Buddy reading times and DEAR sessions provided opportunities for quiet, silent reading in all classes.

To conclude our celebration of World Book Day,Mrs. Farren hosted a Table Quiz for 5th and 6th class in Halla Setanta.Fourteen teams competed and their knowledge of all genres of books was certainly put to the test. After eight rounds of quizzing, only six points separated the top three teams!

Well done to all involved.

A most enjoyable time was had by all and we’re already looking forward to next year’s events.
